My first sewing experience was in 7th grade Home Economics class. I made an ugly felt pillow and an even uglier gathered dirndl skirt that turned out 3 inches too big in the waist. But somehow I had caught the sewing “bug”. No one in my family knew how to sew, and I began to teach myself on an old used sewing machine my mother bought for me. My first real project was a royal blue sleeveless shift dress with a matching triangle scarf and a bow on the end. (Ok, it was the early 60’s!) I can still remember the pride I felt at this accomplishment. After that, I continued to make many of my own clothes, gradually improving on my technique. I went on to study art and sewing in college, but changed my direction to get a nursing degree. Years later, I was still sewing, while staying home with 2 small children, and by chance started working part time sewing costumes for summer stock theatre.

My current focus is mentoring beginner or more experienced sewers to help them create their special projects and avoid the frustration I had of learning without help.
